Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy discloses how I gather, use, and protect your personal data.

The policy applies to personal data collected through the site: joananyambura.com or as described below, by other means during the course of regular business and collaboration.

Who I am

Joana Nyambura, Marketing and Communications Consultant, Toronto, Ontario; email: me@joananyambura.com; website: https://joananyambura.com.

What personal data I collect, why I collect it, and your rights to privacy

Comments

This website offers publicly accessible blog posts. When visitors leave comments on the site, the data shown in the comments form is collected as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. You should be aware that any information you provide in these areas could be read, collected, and used by others.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Newsletter

I may provide the opportunity to sign up for a periodic email newsletter by submitting your email address. I will ask you to confirm it by clicking on a link sent to you via email (double opt-in). The legal basis for this processing is Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR. In some cases I may ask for further information, such as your name, interests, location, or line of business.

I only use this data, and any additional data such as date and time of subscription, for the distribution of the newsletter. In addition, you may terminate the subscription at any time by following the unsubscribe link included in each newsletter.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the site.

Testimonials

I display testimonials of happy clients on the site, in addition to other endorsements. With your express consent, I may post your testimonial along with your name. The legal basis for this processing is Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR. If you wish to update or delete your testimonial, you can contact me at me@joananyambura.com.

Contact forms

I use the information collected via this site’s contact forms expressly for the purposes of fulfilling inquiries. For example, if you submitted a form on the Contact page, I would only use your information to get back to you. I will never use it for marketing purposes.

Form submissions are stored for a maximum of one year for customer service purposes, after which I destroy any personal information.

Cookies and private information storage

This website makes use of cookies to save and retrieve information about your visit(s). If you leave a comment on this site you may opt into saving your name, email, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit a login page, there will be a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Cookies and log files are also used to analyze trends, administer the website, and gather some demographic information about the overall user base. Individual users can control and refuse the use of cookies at the individual browser level. You can also delete installed cookies. Note that some of this data helps to provide the site’s content and to optimize the website’s functionality overall. So although you can still use the site if you reject cookies, your ability to use some features or areas may be limited.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content. This includes tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Privacy and analytics

This site utilizes Google Analytics. In simple terms, Google Analytics mainly uses first-party cookies to generate broad reports on website users and their activity during visit(s). For more information on how Google collects and uses this data, see Google’s Privacy & Terms and Safeguarding your data.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on this website, I also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time with the exception of their username. In addition, website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you. This includes any data you provided me. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent

I may use an automated spam detection service to check visitor comments.
